ESPN Analyst and Detroit Native Jalen Rose Announces Release of Annual College Scholarship Program Guidelines $50,000 in Scholarships for Detroit High School Seniors
March 17, 2009 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Detroit, Michigan – The Jalen Rose Foundation announced today the release of the 2009 guidelines and applications for the Jalen Rose Foundation College Scholarships. For the seventh consecutive year, ESPN Analyst and former University of Michigan and NBA Basketball Star Jalen Rose established the scholarships to help Detroit area students achieve their college dreams. The annual scholarships, totaling $50,000, will be awarded to five Detroit high school seniors beginning their college education in the fall of 2009.
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to earn a college degree, and through this program, more Detroit students will achieve that goal,” said Rose, a graduate of the University of Maryland University College with a Bachelor of Science in Management Studies. “I have always felt very strongly about the importance of education, and I want to help the Detroit community make college a priority for its youth.” The Detroit Southwestern High School alumnus will award a minimum of one scholarship to his alma mater.
Scholarship recipients will be chosen by a committee consisting of Southwestern High School alumnus Jalen Rose, representatives of The Jalen Rose Foundation and appointed members of the Detroit community. Decisions will be made based on academic achievement and goals, extracurricular/community activities and financial need. The deadline for Detroit seniors to apply is April 30, 2009 and recipients will be announced in May. Students can check with their school guidance office to receive an application, visit www.jalenrosefoundation.org for a downloadable form or contact:

Rose added, “We make sure to stay in constant contact with the students who have received scholarships throughout their four year experience. The goal of the program is not only to get kids to college, but to get them to earn a degree. We’ve already had 30 kids come through this program and I feel a sense of pride each time one graduates.”
