The Mellanby Autism Foundation

The Mellanby Foundation was established in 1999 at The Giving Back Fund by
Atlanta Thrasher’s Scott Mellanby and his wife Susan in honor of their son Carter,
who was diagnosed with autism in 1998.
The Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that provide direct care services
to individuals and families affected by autism. Additional support is directed to
autism research. Grants generally range from $1000 - $10,000. The Foundation
has granted more than $300,000 to autism related organizations since its
inception.
Autism is a neurological disorder that impacts the normal development of the
brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Autism
spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 166 children, affecting four times as
many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last
decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a
national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.
