THE MELLANBY AUTISM FOUNDATION AWARDS MORE THAN $50,000 IN GRANTS
TO HELP SUPPORT FAMILIES AFFECTED BY AUTISM
Atlanta, Georgia (December 26, 2005) – The Mellanby Autism Foundation at The
Giving Back Fund announced the distribution of more than $50,000 in grants to
non-profit organizations that provide services for individuals and families affected
by autism, as well as to support autism research.
This represents the sixth grant cycle for the Mellanby Autism Foundation since its
inception in 1999. The Atlanta Thrashers’ hockey star Scott Mellanby and his wife
Susan established the Foundation in honor of their son Carter who was
diagnosed that same year with autism.
Autism is a neurological disorder that impacts the normal development of the brain
in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Autism spectrum
disorders are diagnosed in one in 166 children, affecting four times as many boys
as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public
health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.
“Scott and I are blessed to have the resources available to us to give Carter the
best care possible, and still we worry about his future,” says Sue Mellanby. “Each
year we donate to organizations we hope will help ease the burden for other
families and, perhaps, one day, through research, eliminate the need for autism
foundations such as ours.”
This 2005 grant recipients include DOORS, Friendship Ventures, Jack’s Place,
Jowonia, Peaceful Haven Ranch, Sabah, Youngstown State University, and Cure
Autism Now.
“In the six years I have been privileged to work with Sue and Scott , I am continually
impressed by their deep commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals
and families affected by autism, “ says Giving Back Fund’s CEO Stephanie Sander.
“They are such generous people that invariably we end each grant cycle wishing
we could do more.”
Grant applications are reviewed annually and must be received by May 15th.
