On June 30th 2019, NYC Pride welcomes WorldPride as we mark the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and a half-century of LGBTQIA+ liberation. The 10×10 NYC team has decided to participate by bringing together three local LGBTQ focused charities for this month’s event.

10×10’s MISSION

To Empower the Next Generation of Giving. On the evening of the event, the three selected charities will pitch to the audience and the Shark, who will question the charities about their cause, organization, business model, impact, etc.

  1. 10 volunteer committee members organize a charity event (1 x venue, 3 x charities, 3 x Sharks, food & drink).
  2. Each committee member invites at least 10 of his or her friends to make a $100 pledge (or more) to attend the event (10×10… get it?) creating a pool of at least $10K.
  3. Upon arrival, each attendee is given ‘Charity Dollars’ equal to the value of their “Pledge.”
  4. On the evening of the event, the three selected charities will pitch to the audience and Shark who will question the charities about their cause, organization, business model and impact, etc.
  5. Each attendee then decides directly who they want to give their ‘Charity Dollars’ to.

New Alternatives increases the self-sufficiency of LGBTQ+ homeless youth by enabling them to transition out of the shelter system to stable adult lives. We do this by providing long-term support, weekly case management, education services, life skills training, community-building recreational activities, opportunities for self-expression, and programs for HIV+ youth. Our guiding principles are those of harm reduction, youth development, and empowerment.

Destination Tomorrow is a grassroots agency located in the South Bronx that provides services to and for the LGBTQ community; it is our belief that no one should have to leave their neighborhood to access LGBTQ specific services. Economic empowerment is the underlying goal of all that Destination Tomorrow does. We focus on education and practical life skills that take our clients off the path of needing emergency treatment, housing or healthcare services. Destination Tomorrow believes it is more helpful to empower clients to avoid crisis situations, via offerings such as a financial literacy program in collaboration with TD Bank, a four-week job readiness program, and sexual health education.

New York City’s senior housing crisis is only just beginning. LGBTQ older adults face additional extraordinary challenges: lack of family support networks; more pronounced health and mental health challenges; more widespread poverty; fear of discrimination and abuse within the elder care system. We won’t rest until New York City’s LGBTQ older adults can live in safe, welcoming housing they can afford, with access to health and mental health services capable of meeting their unique needs. Our goal is to grow our young organization to become a viable building partner by June of 2021.  In preparation for that, we are training and acquiring the skills we need in that toolkit. And we are organizing and educating the community about the problem and the possible solutions.
